Our History

TIARA originated as an association of residents based in the Canadian Thousand Islands, both year round and seasonal, who were concerned about the future of this beautiful area. In 1975, TIARA successfully organized local citizens against the looming threat of government interference – preserving 30 square miles of islands and waterfront properties from federal expropriation!

The Thousand Islands Alliance of River Advocates has since evolved into a nimble organization. It pays attention to how local, provincial and federal governments protect or fail to protect the astonishing features and beauty of this great river’s unique ecosystem.

Objectives

TIARA’s Principal Goal is to preserve and improve the present character of the Thousand Islands area with an emphasis on the river and its environment.

TIARA builds alliances with other like- minded organizations and groups, respecting diversity, inclusion and the more-than-human world.

One of TIARA’s current projects is to have the mighty St. Lawrence, the Kaniatarowanenneh, “the majestic and magnificent river” finally acquire its rightful place as one of Canada’s Heritage Rivers.

We believe that the long-range view should be taken when new development is being planned, and that the special atmosphere and beauty of the Thousand Islands should be considered when decisions are being made.

We are conscious of our environment, and the cumulative impact over time of many small decisions upon such dwindling resources as wetlands and natural shoreline.

We are committed to preserving and passing on the rich human history of this area. We are concerned about good land use planning, about Official Plans and zoning by-laws which reflect the wishes of the membership.

We are concerned about the economy of our area, and that people should continue to live and work here in harmony with their surroundings in a sustainable fashion.

We take a long-range view, seeing the future of the Thousand Islands as more than our lifetime. We want to be proud of what we are passing on to our children and grandchildren.
